Something to Celebrate!

Saturday, 22.08.2015
Although our usual day off is Sunday, we were forced to have fun on Saturday instead, by attending Frank and Christie‘s wedding on the site. We were able to provide light entertainment at the wedding reception by singing local songs to the huge congregation before joining in with the dancing. The invitation the this Ghanaian wedding was an amazing experience and insight to Ghanaian traditions, which we are greatly appreciative of.

Sunday became a work day for the majority of participants. An outdoor fireplace was constructed along with developing the surrounding landscape. Work began on the roof, fabricating it out of wood and metal sheets, which was attached the larger earth wall. Ramming also continued on the small earth wall on the south side.
There was also a jungle tour to the ‘big tree‘ (a large tree that was once hit by lightning and therefore stands out from all the surrounding foliage) which allows stunning views to Kumasi from across the jungle.

After 13 days, we finished the ramming process on the big wall: the last layer was poured and rammed in the afternoon, reaching the final height of around 3 meters tall. The work on the small rammed earth wall and the adobe brick walls continued until the afternoon, both are about to be finished on Tuesday. The first bench top was completed creating a comfortable atmosphere. We christened our new fireplace later that the evening.
